CONTINUUM is envisioned as a transformative urban intervention that redefines the northern entrance of Beirut, shifting it from a fragmented infrastructural corridor into a vibrant, inclusive civic gateway. The project’s main goal is to reconnect divided urban fabrics while integrating mobility, public life, and ecological systems into a cohesive experience. Positioned along the Charles Helou Highway—a major artery that currently isolates Mar Mikhael from Karantina and cuts off access to the Mediterranean coast—CONTINUUM addresses both physical and social disconnection. Located directly in front of the historic Mar Mikhael Train Station, the project leverages this symbolic site to bridge past and future, positioning itself as a prototype for a renewed urban and transport vision.

The architectural concept is rooted in the idea of continuity—spatial, social, and infrastructural—expressed through a layered system that harmonizes movement and place-making. At its core lies a +6-meter elevated green platform, conceived as both a literal and symbolic bridge, acting as the project’s central organizing element. This platform functions as a “social condenser,” where fast-moving transit infrastructure is embedded below, while human-centered activities unfold above. The project is vertically zoned according to speed and experience: from high-speed vehicular movement and transport systems in the basement and ground levels, to slower, more interactive public and cultural spaces on the upper floors. These include a civic terrace, cultural and educational facilities, and a landscaped rooftop amphitheater. Each layer is designed to contribute to a unified narrative of reconnection, integrating mobility with cultural identity and public engagement.

Levels while encouraging gradual exploration. This continuous circulation system, complemented by ramps, stairs, and open transitions, ensures accessibility and fosters interaction across different user groups. Transitional spaces—such as shaded terraces, open-air exhibition zones, and planted voids—create moments of pause and visual connection between layers. As users ascend from the infrastructural base to the elevated public realms, they experience a shift from speed and noise to calmness and community. Ultimately, CONTINUUM embodies its vision as more than a transport hub; it becomes a living urban landscape that reconnects the city physically and socially, redefining infrastructure as a space of encounter, culture, and collective identity.
